What is copyright?
Copyright is an unregistered right that protects work that can be 'fixed' in some way, i.e, on paper, as a sound recording, or on an electronic media such as the internet. Items that are protected are:
- * Original literary works, (eg: novels, instruction manuals, newspaper articles)
- * Original dramatic works, including dance or mime
- * Original artistic works, (eg: paintings, drawings, engravings, sculpture, maps)
- * Published editions of works (i.e: the typographical arrangement of a publication)
- * Sound recordings
- * Films, including videos
- * Broadcasts
Copyright gives the creator of a 'work' (anything protected by copyright is called a work) economic rights enabling them to control the use of their material in a number of ways, such as by making copies, issuing copies to the public, performing in public, broadcasting or and use on-line. The purpose of copyright is to enable creators to receive financial reward for their efforts to encourage future creativity.
Copyright protection is automatic as soon as a record exists of a work that has been created. It does not have to be registered, therefore is called an 'automatic right'.
International Copyright
There are no international copyright laws, however in most countries creative works are automatically protected as they are in the UK. There are several international conventions covering copyright, including the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works, administered by the World Intellectual Property Organisation, and the Universal Copyright Convention which is administered by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. Copyright material created by UK nationals is automatically protected in each of the member states of these organisations.

Laura Young retains the copyright on all Pet Portraits Commissions. Pet Portraits are sold for personal use only, and not financial gain.
Images owned by Laura Young are not to be used on any other website, unless written permission has been graned. If images are authorised for use by carefully selected third party organisations Laura Young must be credited for the work. Laura Young will request the removal of any images found on unauthorised websites
Under no circumstances should images owned by Laura Young be made available for download or for sale, or give permission for third parties to use the images.
Images on this website are protected by the international © copyright mark, as well as a 'no right click' facility. They are also saved at 72dpi to reduce their printable quality
